to changing gun laws now in the wake of this latest massacre in newtown connecticut, with 26 people being dead and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipart san gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of new town massacre. gun cont

this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. as newtown and the rest of the nation try to make some sense out of this tragedy that took the lives of 20 children. i'm joined this hour by cnn's soledad o'brien. soledad? >> good morning to you, wolf. here's what we know right now. this morning, connecticut's chief medical examiner will be performing autopsies on the gunman, adam lanza and on his mother, as well, who was killed at her home. the results of those autopsies we're expecting to be released at a news conference that will be held later today. also today, president obama will be in newtown. he will speak at a memorial service. before that service, he will meet with members of the victims' families and also with first responders, as well. we know the names were made public last night. 12 girls, 8 boys killed in all. either 6 or 7 years old and 6 adults killed at the school, as well. they were all women. the medical examiner said the primary weapon in the massacre was a semi-automatic rifle that was found at the scene and every victim he examined, which were seven victims, had been hit more than once. one case 1 1 ti1 times. he pe

this hour on the massacre of the school in newtown, connecticut. 20 children and six adults were killed and the lone gunman took his own life. i understand we are learn something new details about the gunman, adam lanza, and his family. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good afternoon. we are starting to put together some of the pieces of the p s te puz i will. adam lanza was home schooled. he has been described by students who -- when he did go to school, classmates of him, as very intelligent and as we have often heard in these cases, also described as loner. someone that didn't have a lot of friends. went out of his way not to be noticed, of course, he couldn't have changed that in a more devastating way than he did by going into that elementary school. his aunt, who has not seen him since he was 3 years old, spoke just within the last hour to local reporters in north carolina. here is what she had to say about adam. >> he was different. he was quiet. nice kid. good kid. he was challenging the family in that house. never in trouble with the law. never in trouble with anything. >> sh

in newtown. it's not just the white house. it's not just congress. today there's major news out of michigan where the republican governor rick snyder has vetoed legislation that would allow concealed weapons in churches and schools and day care centers. new polls show support for stricter gun control is at a ten-year high. the company that owns the gun maker that produced the rifle used in last week's massacre plans to sell it. calling the shooting a quote, water shed event. and dick sporting goods has suspend the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of their change. this is change. this is different. yet the right wing is already gearing up for a fight. fox news reports that the nra is expected to push back soon. they'll hold a news conference on friday. and republican governors still aren't convinced that guns are the problem. governor jan brewer says quote, i'm not sure additional gun control is something that needs to be addressed. i don't know how we get our arms around it. don't know how to get your arms around it? how about disarming those who shouldn't have weapons? and virginia go

. from washington our investigative correspondent live at newtown high school. let me start with you, pete. what's the latest on the investigation and the question that investigators said they will tell us at some point which is how closer are we to knowing why? >> not much that i know of, chuck. they had been hopeful that they could extract some information from the computers that he had in the home. he was very into computers, they say. he was very socially with drawn. he was very engaged with computers. they say before he left his mother's house on the morning that he shot and killed her while she was sleeping, he damaged extensively his computers that he took the hard drive out and tried to tamper with the inside of it and pulled the disk out and did a lot of damage to it. it's not clear whether they will be able to extract information and they will try their best and there is hope they will find something. there was no letter or note left behind. he was not someone who apparently was involved in social media. he didn't post things on websites or chat rooms. there is precious lit
